How do we tackle those big, existential topics?
“[Climate] Scientists and [insurance] actuaries “are sailing past each other like ships in the night despite the fact they are using the same language of climate risk” ”
I read this in the FT the other day, in an article rather ominously titled 'The uninsurable world: how the insurance industry fell behind on climate change'.
The quote refers to the different approaches in estimating climate impacts, and how this is affecting what insurers insure.
I have many thoughts about the article, all far too long for an online post (catch me for a coffee if you want the tea! ☕), so I’ll leave you to read the fine words of the authors if you’re interested.
But I do have something to say on that specific quote.
Because, well, it doesn’t matter if you’re speaking the same language or not, if you’re not in the same room to begin with.
Climate change, like AI, like most of the most pressing risks and opportunities today, is systemic and multifaceted.
Solutions will come from broad, interdisciplinary teams sharing ideas and knowledge.
We need interconnectivity, great communicators and open minds.
More collaborations such as the ones producing the insightful 'Emperor’s New Climate Scenarios' and 'Climate Scorpion' papers (excellent content and excellent titles!), along with a focus on how to practically move forward, implement change and refine the way things are done day to day.
Problem solving with people who don’t think the same way as you can be challenging, sure. But it has the potential to produce much better outcomes.
(Shout out to Rebel Ideas - Matthew Syed - another great read!)
So let’s keep getting back in that room! The future might just depend on it. 😊
